Abstract
From Vienna to New York, Macedonia’s Music Progressive Quartet won over the most discerning audiences with their Balkan inspired melodies. Far from traditional, the string quartet gives classical music a modern jazz twist and a hint of exotic allure.
The quartet is scheduled to perform three shows in Vancouver thanks to Paul McEwan of the West Coast Symphony Orchestra. McEwan met the quartet last year while on a six-city tour of Albania and Macedonia with the symphony, and was impressed with the quartet’s musicality. "They simply rock the house--way more than you might expect from a group of 'classical' musicians," said McEwen, who was motivated to return the hospitality that the symphony received while touring the Baltic region.
On Friday, April 26th, the quartet will be performing with the West Coast Symphony Orchestra at Christ Church Cathedral at 8:00 pm. Vancouver conductor Bujar Llapaj, former director the Albanian National Opera and inspiration behind the symphony’s Baltic tour last year, will lead the performance.
The quartet will perform a series of music written and orchestrated by quartet member, Marko Videnovic and Duke Bojadziev. Then the orchestra will conclude with the tale of an opium poisoned artist hopelessly in love, known as Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique.
Concert program:
Hector Berlioz: Overture to Les Troyens
Duke Bojadziev: Opening
Marko Videnovic: Stream for the soul
Marko Videnovic: 1999 Forever
Hector Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique
