Mitigating Environmental Risks at the Probistip Tailing Storage Facility, North Macedonia

Historical mining activities and the application of techniques that caused significant
environmental impacts have emphasized the need to pay special attention to these environmental
hotspots. Tailings storage facilities are among the most common hotspots, and this paper analyzes the
Probistip tailings storage facility as one of the oldest and most significant hotspots in North Macedonia.
The study determines the current condition of the area where the old Probistip tailings storage facility is
located and assesses its impact on different environmental media. Based on the obtained results,
appropriate techniques for mitigating the negative environmental impacts are considered.
