Abstract
Reconceptualizing Testing and Evaluation in English Language Teaching
In English Language Teaching (ELT), there has been a notable change in the understanding and application of testing and evaluation. Current views consider assessment as a continuous and essential part of teaching and learning, rather than tests being seen as separate, final measures of accomplishment. Rethinking testing and evaluation means moving past conventional written exams to approaches that focus more on the learner, are formative, and assess performance, thereby reflecting the intricate nature of communicative ability.
This broader perspective emphasizes the significance of feedback, self-evaluation, collaborative work among peers, and practical assignments that reflect actual language application. Concurrently, it upholds fundamental tenets like validity, dependability, and impartiality. Integrating assessment into daily classroom activities enables educators to more effectively foster learner independence, identify learning gaps, and adjust teaching methods for varied situations. In essence, a revised approach to testing and assessment in English Language Teaching fosters a more comprehensive grasp of language ability and leads to fairer and more impactful learning results.
Keywords: classroom assessment, formative feedback, communicative tasks, learner autonomy, teaching effectiveness.
