Abstract
Emma Bovary or: The character-creative function of the detail
This article treats the problem of detail in the novel Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. Attention is directed to literary detail what qualifies the woman hero Emma Bovary.
Treatment of the category detail, so typical of realistic writing and especially the novels of Flaubert, shows diversity in their character-creative functionality. It is found as detail-hand/hands,which is most frequent and therefore by its meaning fundamental, further as detail-eye/eyes, detail-face and detail-smile.
The aim of the paper, which offers a "female" point of view regarding the character of Emma Bovary, is to show "immoral" and "innocence" of Emma, and most of all, her immanent "feminine" and "otherness" (= distinctness, being different) . This is done in such a way that leads to the conclusion that Emma "lives in every woman" just as every woman, par excellence, undoubtedly is present, and "lives" in Emma.
Keywords: detail, detail-hand/hands, "female" nature, "immorality," "innocence," "guilt," "true self" (= own).
