Abstract

The subject of this lecture is the rights of minorities and their sustainability in the Macedonian case. The concept of sustainability in this context refers to the persistence of minority rights. Main attention will be given to the protection of minorities in North Macedonia (constitutional and legal norms and implementation policies) in order to identify how sustainable they are. (For better understanding of minorities issues, a brief comparison of the legal protection of minorities in Hungary and North Macedonia will be made).
The presentation will be conducted by analysing how often constitutional and legal dispositions and policies for their implementation in North Macedonia, change. Particular attention will be given to Ohrid Framework Agreement dispositions and results of their implementation. This agreement was signed in 2001, to ensure democracy in the country (promotion of peaceful and harmonious development of civil society with respect for the ethnic identity and interests of all Macedonian citizens) and to enable the development of closer and more integrated relations between Macedonia and the Euro-Atlantic community.
