Abstract
According to currently accepted definition (FAO 2000), “food security” is achieved when it is ensured that “all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life”. “Nutrition security” can be defined as adequate nutritional status in terms of protein, energy, vitamins, and minerals for all household members at all times (Quisumbing, 1995) and thus in principle is more than food security.
According to Bokeloh (2005) one of the fields of actions for food availability improvement is development of food production and agricultural productivity where agricultural research for development of improved farming systems, including appropriate use of the potential of biotechnology, geared towards small and subsistence farms. Biotechnology can offer variety of tools for plant breeding.
The main research beneficiaries are the Macedonian genetics and breeders. The results of the projects and the enriched pepper agrodiversity will contribute to creation of pepper genotypes and new pepper varieties of extremely importance for seed production process. A successful biotechnological breeding and achievement of pepper genotypes and varieties with desired features will lead in their promotion of them to the agricultural producers and farmers to help sustainable development, on local and even more on the region level.
