Abstract
In the Macedonian and in the Turkish scientific public, it's a little-known that Mustafa Kemal visited Shtip in july 1909. At that time he was an officer and a companion-adjutant of the military commander Naji - Bey, who was a son-in-law to some Turkish family in Shtip. They visited Shtip especially for the Christian holiday “Petrovden” (middle of July) and (along with other Turks in high-ranked army and political positions), attended a cultural-artistic performance organised by the orthodox Macedonians. Testimonies of this performance were preserved and written in the middle of the XX century, when there were still living witnesses and participants of this event in Shtip. Based on these testimonies, we made a space and time location of this event. We made a short review of the political situation at that time in the Ottoman empire in order to understand the nature of this visit, and we also made a review of the life in Shtip at the time when this great Turkish reformer visited.
We managed to discover the identities of some of the participants in this cultural-artistic manifestation, who presented their acts before the high-ranked Turkish delegation. An interesting detail of this event is when the Turkish military commander was so impressed by a drawing made by a Macedonian child (that he drew during the event), so he generously gave him his expensive golden watch.
