Abstract

This paper examines the acculturation and assimilation of Macedonian emigrants in the USA. Similar to its neighboring countries, the Republic of Macedonia has been affected by a wave of increased migration. It is of note that the number of Macedonians who migrate to European as well as overseas countries, such as the USA, has been steadily growing. It is felt that despite the relevance of the subject of this investigation, there remains a paucity of research, which has prompted the author to focus her research on it.
The main objective of the research was to examine the opinions and attitudes of Macedonians living in the USA about the process of their acculturation and integration into life in the United States. Making use of the author’s own social network, 50 Macedonian emigrants living in the USA were contacted and surveyed. Subsequently, three of the respondents partook in semi-structured interviews.
There were three main questions which this study tried to investigate. The first research question tried to examine the most common reasons why Macedonians decided to emigrate to the USA. The second research question aimed to explore the perceptions Macedonians had of Americans and whether they found more similarities or differences between the two cultures. Finally, the third research question wanted to determine the extent to which Macedonians had integrated into American society.
