Abstract
Purpose: To assess the role of early neurorehabilitation in acute spinal cord injury.
Material and methods: A 40 year-old man with paresthesia in both hands and severe neck pain after a car accident, normal radiography and CT data for spinal cord injury at C3-C4 level was examined. The spinal cord was partially narrowed due to the lig.flava thickening. Neurorehabilitation and medication therapy were applied in two periods: strict bed rest up to 1st month and restorative period up to the 2 months after the injury.
Results: The treatment of spinal cord injury begins by restricting the movement of the spine and maintaining blood pressure within normal limits. Other interventions vary depending on the location and degree of injury from surgery to neurorehabilitation and kinesitherapy.
Conclusion: In many cases, spinal cord injuries require prolonged treatment.
