Abstract
Macedonia is a country with developed textile industry, which has an important role in the Macedonian economy. In the country, there are 395 textile companies registered for apparel manufacturing. This industrial activity employs 31.742 employees. The key factor for its development due to labor-intensive character is human resources and their qualitative characteristics. Employers of textile companies have an obligation to ensure safety in the work place for all employees from every work related aspect, to introduce protective measures, and to choose working and production methods that will improve the level of safety and health at work. It is therefore desirable to make a workplace risk assessment for each workplace. Risk assessment is the systematic recording and assessment of all factors of the work process in order to determine the possible types of hazards and threats to the safety and health of workers. In this paper, a risk assessment on the workplace band-knife cutting machine in cutting rooms (knife in the form of an infinite ribbon blade) was done. The machine is used for accurate cutting lays in conventional cutting rooms of the apparel manufacturing companies that do not have an automatic computer controlled cutting system which provides the most accurate possible cutting. With the band knives can be obtained a higher cutting accuracy compared to a straight or round knife cutting machine. A band-knife cutting machine comprises a series of three or more pulleys, powered by an electric motor, with a continuously rotating steel blade mounted on them. One edge of the blade is sharpened. The principle of operation is different from a straight or a round knife in that the band knife passes through a slot in the cutting table in a fixed position and the section of lay to be cut is moved past it. The blade is usually narrower than on a straight knife and there is no standard behind it, both factors which assist the cutting of tight curves. A band knife workplace may be arranged so that the operator either pushes or pulls the section of lay towards the knife. Recognition and identification of the risks at the workplace in question was carried out on the basis of observation, monitoring and recording. The magnitude of the risk is estimated by the simple method of product factors: P-Probability, F-Frequency, E-Exposure (time), F-Fatal outcome (mortality). All factors are assessed with a score of 1-5. According to the results of this investigation the workplace band-knife cutting machine belongs to the category of workplaces with moderate risk.
