Abstract

Procession of the icon of Virgin Mary from the Monastery of St. Stephen in the village Konce
The custom Procession of the icon of Virgin Mary from the Monastery of St. Stephen in the village Konce aims rain calling for fruitful and prosperous year, made by the peasants from the village Konce for the feast St. Savior "Spasovden" (forty days after the resurrection of Christ). The custom is a remnant of an animistic cult, where primarily exist the belief in the souls of the dead, or the cult of the ancestors who represents the dominant point in the structure of our folk religion. In this case we have the relation between mystical forces and spirits of the vegetation. Belief in supernatural forces that exist in the animate and inanimate world from which depend on the fertility and prosperity of the whole community is still alive in the magical religious awareness among the people. In order to receive this impersonal mystical power is performed the ritual of sacrifice and eating of the selected animal. Lamb sacrifice, is the part of the ritual lunch that is shared in the church. Verbal and nonverbal forms of communication allow distinguishing two main connections of magical procedure.
Basil represents strong "apotropajon" (protector) and is unavoidable in different lustrations, which are performed through purification with basil, by spraying. In our example boy goes ahead of the procession and spray with basil from the pot with water, "cleaning" the way procession should pass through with participants of the custom. The custom begins about 7 am in the curch St. Stephen in the village Konce. When performing the custom, the participants in the procession carrying the icon of the Virgin Mary are visiting the following sites in the vicinity of the village: Kostadinci, Denkini Cuki, Gajnov Dol (Roman temple), Drnovec (Late Antique settlement), Dabo (Saint George Church,) Dabjeto, church St. Constantine and Helen in the village Lubnica. At the end, the icon of Virgin Mary with villagers from the village Lubnica, who join the procession, will return at church St Stephen in the village Konce. At church St. Stephen the participants in the procession are greeted with songs and music from bagpipes. By eating the lunch in the churchyard the custom ends.
