Abstract
The paper analyzes the narrative segments in the novel “The Witch” (Kultura, Skopje, 2006) by the Macedonian author Venko Andonovski which refer to the cultural relations between Macedonia and Croatia. Macedonian-Croatian (Croatian-Macedonain) intercultural relations in this novel are perceived at several structural levels: characters (anthroponyms and other integrative signs), actants (functions, predicates), chronotopes (temporal axis, toponyms, setting), linguistic equivalents (lexical level), historical narrative layers, religious-philosophical discourse, folklore fragments, etc. For example, the semantic fields of numerous characters in the novel implicitly and explicitly reflect Macedonian-Croatian intercultural relations – Jovana from Vevcani (Johana Gracijanchik), the trader Florijan Gracijanchik from Dubrovnik, the priest Isijan from Macedonia (Vevcani), padre Benjamin and others. A great number of toponyms are also indications of Macedonian-Croatian intercultural relations – Zagreb, Medvedgrad, Dubrovnik, Susedgrad, the Adriatic Sea, Varazdinske Toplice (in Croatia), Vevcani, Jankov Kamen, the springs in Vevcani, Struga, the quay of the River Vardar, London Cafè (Skopje), Stip (in Macedonia), etc. Thus, through the analysis of all the above mentioned narrative layers, the paper elaborates Macedonian-Croatian intercultural relations in the novel “The Witch” by Venko Andonovski.
