Abstract
Pre-prosthetic surgery is aimed at providing a good healthy surface for the insertion of dentures and involves all surgical procedures by virtue of which an ideal smooth, healthy U shaped ridge is achieved.
Fibrous hyperplasia of the mucosa (formerly known as epulis fissuratum or inflammatory hyperplasia) is a generalized hyperplastic enlargement of mucosa and fibrous tissue in the alveolar ridge and vestibular area, usually due to chronic trauma of the mucosa of the mucolabial or mucobuccal fold, due to ill-fitting complete or partial dentures. Treatment is surgical and consists of excision of the hyperplasia.
In this study fibrous hyperplasia in the frontal and posterior area of the maxilla with the surgical procedure of removing the hyperplastic tissue are presented.
The hyperplastic tissue usually represents only the result of an inflammatory process; other pathologic conditions may exist. It is therefore imperative that representative tissue samples always be submitted for pathologic examination after removal.
