Abstract

Introduction: Young people in many countries are beginning to drink at earlier ages. Research in developed countries has found that early initiation of alcohol use is associated with greater likelihood of both alcohol dependence and alcohol-related injury later in life. In the US, the average age of first use of alcohol is 13.1 years. Among young people surveyed in 23 European countries, more than half of 11 year-olds in most countries reported that have tasted alcohol. 40 % of the 15 and 16 year old adolescents in Republic of Macedonia reported that they have never consumed alcohol so far.
Purpose: to present the habits toward alcohol among students from the Faculty of medical sciences in Stip, as well as to present the manners of prevention of alcoholism.
Material and methods: the paper includes survey of 182 examined students from the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Stip through a questionnaire.
Results: As of the examined students at the Faculty of Medical Sciences 75% reported that they have consumed alcohol during the lifetime and 60% reported that they have consumed alcohol during the last 30 days. 60% of students have not been alcohol intoxicated so far and 40% had been intoxicated more than once. The most frequently consummated beverage among the students is beer.
In conclusion: Macedonian students face many health problems related with behaviors, including consuming alcohol, therefore is necessary to pay more attention to this problem, better prevention and stronger support.
