The Republic of Macedonia, situated in the middle of the Balkan Peninsula, has gained independence in 1991. The country has gone through a number of healthcare reforms in recent years. Some of the biggest challenges in the healthcare sector comprise: long average length of hospital stay and low average occupancy rates in hospitals. The objective of the ongoing reforms is to reduce the number of patients in secondary and tertiary healthcare in comparison to primary healthcare. This chapter aims at describing the healthcare system in the Republic of Macedonia and to underline its major changes.
