Abstract

Aims: The objective of this study was to perform a Cultural and translation adaptation process of the Inhaler Technique Questionnaire (InTeQ) into Macedonian language according to a formal methodology.
This represents a significant advancement in adherence research in North Macedonia, given that poor inhaler technique is a major contributing factor. It can lead to suboptimal drug delivery and compromise the effectiveness of treatment.
Metods: The original version of the InTeQ and permission for its use was obtained from the developing team. The translation and adaptation process were done according to the Principles of Good Practice for the Translation and Cultural Adaptation Process for Patient-Reported Outcomes (PRO).
The steps considered included: obtaining permission (preparation), translating from English to Macedonian (two versions), reconciling into one translated questionnaire, back-translating into English by a native speaker, reviewing the back translation against the original questionnaire, conducting cognitive debriefing with 15 asthma patients, analyzing the cognitive debriefing results and incorporating them into the recent Macedonian version of the questionnaire, finalizing the translation, proofreading for minor errors, and preparing a comprehensive final report detailing all translation and cultural adaptation decisions for submission to the researchers.
Results: Only one item was subjected to cultural and linguistic adjustments to improve its relevance and ensure it sounded more natural in the Macedonian language. In the two translated versions, it was a difference between the term “fully” regarding the first question. In the second step reconciliation of the two translated version, they discussed about the term “fully” and decided to use a term that refer more to term “completely” because its best fitted the Macedonian context. The result of back translation was very similar to the original English version. The patients expressed their satisfaction with the Macedonian version of the InteQ, finding it very useful, clear, and comprehensive. The tool was used for self-reporting.
Conclusion: We generated a Macedonian translation of the InTeQ. The subsequent phase involves testing the finalized version with subjects or patients from the target setting. Additional research is required to confirm that the Macedonian version of the InTeQ exhibits the necessary measurement properties for its intended use.
