Abstract

In both terms, multilingualism and bilingualism refer to the cohabitation and shared use of two or more languages by people and communities. The area of bilingualism and multilingualism studies has grown to be well-established, extensive, and extremely interdisciplinary. Scholars have investigated the origins and sources of bilingualism and multilingualism, the practices involved in utilizing and regulating several languages, and the implications of these traits for both the individual and the community. Starting with the examination of the concepts of language and language interaction, this paper explores some of the major questions that research on bilingualism and multilingualism has investigated. The majority of the content focuses on bilingualism and multilingualism from both an individual and societal perspective. A review of language and multilingualism is included in the conclusion.
