Abstract

The paper presents a didactic proposal for teaching Italian to Macedonian university students that aims to connect literary themes in the language handbooks to contemporary
topics. The contribution offers a brief theoretical introduction on the distinction between
the various categories of authentic materials and gives some insights on the relevance of
the use of literary works in a didactic context. Literary pieces are identified in the language manuals used by the Macedonian learners at the Faculty of Philology of the Goce Delcev University, Stip, North Macedonia (L’italiano all’università 2 and Nuovo Progetto Italiano 2). The second part of the contribution offers ideas on how to connect the literary theme to different current issues in authentic materials online. The didactic proposal is developed in three phases: the first phase foresees that the students understand the topic dealt with in the literary piece, then they are encouraged to find the key words and to connect them with current issues. In the second phase students are encouraged to find thematically congruent authentic materials on Internet. It is recommended that this phase be carried out outside the institutional context as a substitute for teaching in presence. In the final phase students present the topic orally after elaborating the authentic material. With this teaching proposal students recognize the relationships between a literary text and the current context (social and cultural), develop the ability to compare and comment on texts of various kinds, and then to use them to coherently organize the argumentative discourse and develop their own exposition.
