Abstract

Introduction: Bruxism is a parafunctional habit
known from the beginning of humankind. Patients
can have many different types of bruxism, deriving
from psychological, occlusal factors or factors such as
mixed dentition, partial edentulism of multifactorial
etiology.
Material and methods: The aim of this study is to
represent a digital design of a stabilization splint
of an orthodontic patient with parafunctional habit
bruxism. A 30-year-old patient that has had occlusal
orthodontic problems such as crowding, after finishing
her orthodontic treatment, came to the dental office
with temporomandibular dysfunctions. Suffering
tremendous pain, headaches she was in need of
a first aid protocol. She was prescribed vitamins,
supplements, and painkillers and was instructed on
physiotherapy, and a digitally designed stabilization
splint was manufactured.
Results and Discussion: In this case study, the digital
scanner is of great help, because of the reduction
of opening of the patients’ mouth classical dental
impressions could not be taken. That is why digital
impressions were obtained from the patients’ upper jaw,
lower jaw and a digitally designed stabilization splint
was manufactured in her lower jaw. She was followed
for a period of six months, after which her objective
symptoms followed by objective confirmation have
disappeared.
Conclusion: The elimination of the patients’ symptoms
justifies the manufacturing of a digitally designed
stabilization splint, because of the limited space for
classic impression and because of the precision it
produces.
Key words: bruxism, orthodontic patient, digitally
designed stabilization splint
