Abstract
Untreated periodontal disease leads to tooth loss through destruction of the attachment apparatus and tooth-supporting structures. The goals of periodontal therapy include not only the arrest of periodontal disease progression, but also the regeneration of structures lost to disease where appropriate. Several surgical techniques have been developed to regenerate periodontal tissues including guided tissue regeneration (GTR), bone grafting (BG) and the use of enamel matrix derivative (EMD). Emdo-
gain (enamel matrix derivative, EMD) is well recognized in periodontology, where it is used as a local adjunct to periodontal surgery. When applied to cleaned tooth root surfaces the unique protein composition in Emdogain is able to induce the regeneration of all periodontal tissues: cementum, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone and gingiva. In this review paper we performed an electronic database search and we reviewed the efficacy of enamel matrix derivative (EMD) in the treatment of
intrabony defects, class II mandibular furcation defects with minimal interproximal bone loss and gingival recession defects. In the paper we have highlighted the more significant trends in the use of enamel matrix protein derivative combined with new types of periodontal surgeries.
