Abstract
Introduction: One of the most important factors in planning the orthodontic treatment is to evaluate the soft tissue. This study aims to assess the facial type and the reliability of photogrammetry in comparison to anthropometry.
Materials and Methods:Fifty-five individuals were included. Facial height and width were measured, facial index was calculated. Frontal photographs were taken using a Nikon Z6 II-24.5 MP, NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 lens and a Godox AD200 flash. Measurements were made using software. The morphological points were determined by inspection and palpation. Digital caliper was used to measure the distance between the points. The Banister’s classification was used to classify the different face types. An independent sample t-test was used to assess the difference.
Results: The most common face type was found to be mesoprosopic (36.4%), 25.5% leptoprosopic, 23.6% hyperleptoprosopic and 14.5% euriprosopic. Males were predominantly leptoprosopic (47.06%) and females were mesoprosopic (42.1%). The mean value of facial height in males 123.02±5.59 and facial width 131.99±6.90. The mean value of facial height in females 113.24±5.69 and facial width 124.404±7.744. There was no statistically significant difference between the two methods at a significance level of p < .05.
Conclusion: The mean value of both facial height and facial width were slightly higher in males. Photogrammetry can be effectively used as an alternative to anthropometry and to be integrated into orthodontic clinical practice.
