Abstract
The chemical and physical analysis of the constituent materials of artifacts and items that are classified as a cultural heritage has been a significant challenge in the field of dating and conservation in archeology. The quest for instrumental tools that are non-destructive and require very small sample quantity can be perceived as the primary concern of contemporary research in archeological chemical analysis. The need of developing a reliable scientific protocol that can be successfully applied in dating, conservation, and restoration of cultural heritage items and artifacts has initiated development of specific analytical instruments designed in a way to provide fast and trustworthy data that will be of relevance to the archeologist and conservators. During the chemical and physical examination of such items, it is essential to acknowledge their inherent complexity. Most of
these objects are intricate combinations of diverse materials, frequently subject to chemical, biological, or physical interactions, as well as various forms of damage over time. These events undoubtedly contribute to the establishment of complex analytical protocols. Consequently, any analysis must accommodate this complexity to ensure precise and reliable results, which are needed to solve the puzzle surrounding artifact’s origin, composition, and age. In this review, we are delighted that we got a chance to give our views on the major achievements reported in latest remarkable book of the siblings Doménech-Carbó (Antonio and Maria Teresa) that covers large part of electrochemistry applied in the service of analysis, conservation, and dating of cultural heritage of various nature. Spanning 365 pages, the book is thoughtfully partitioned into 12 chapters, mirroring the ratio of the number of days to months in a calendar year. As reviewers of this book, we highly recommend it to all individuals and groups engaged in electrochemistry and archeology, but also to the students willing to get familiar with practical applications of electrochemistry. In a general concept, this remarkable book can be perceived as providing mutual benefit both for the studies of natural sciences and the humanities.
