Abstract

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition that can often result in lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) leading to a significant deterioration in patients’ quality of life (QoL). HRQOL refers to the subjective well-being status everyone may perceive in terms of physical, mental, socioeconomic, and spiritual aspects BPH affects HRQOL by inducing psychological stress in patients due to anxiety and deterioration of their social function. The more severe the symptoms of BPH, the lower the HRQOL becomes; HRQOL of patients with BPH who experience worsening symptoms due to aging has been shown to be significantly reduced. A range of treatment alternatives are available for patients with LUTS/BPH. However, relatively few studies have compared the effect symptoms of the BPH on QoL and the most widely used therapeutic strategies for LUTS/BPH in real-world conditions. This analytic approach provides additional evidence on current therapeutic options for managing LUTS/BPH and should help to further inform decision-making regarding treatment strategies in this patient population. A holistic approach is needed in managing BPH, thus leading to better HRQOL and psychological well-being in patients with BPH.
