Abstract

Increased awareness of occupational disease was
one factor contributing to the adoption of the
Occupational Safety and Health Act. The US
Department of Labor currently uses four main
categories for the classification of occupational
diseases: occupational skin diseases or disorders,
respiratory disorders due to toxic agents,
poisoning (systemic effects of toxic materials)
and other occupational diseases. The Danger
Communication Standard sets out uniform
requirements to ensure that hazards from all
chemicals introduced into, manufactured or used
in the workplace are assessed and that the results
of these assessments are communicated to the
employers and employees concerned. The
potential for stress exists when the environmental
situation is a demand that threatens to exceed a
person's capabilities and resources to achieve it.
Employee stress manifests itself in several ways,
including increased absenteeism, turnover, lower
productivity, and workplace mistakes. Exhaustion
(burnout) occurs when a job is no longer relevant
to a person, it may be the result of stress or various
other work-related or personal factors.
In addition, substance abuse results in reduced
productivity, reduced quality of work, damage to
property and equipment, theft, lower morale,
security breaches, and poor decision making.
