Abstract
The aim of this paper is to define the content and the axiological value of the concepts homeland and state in Macedonian (expressed by the Macedonian lexemes
татковина and држава, respectively). Professional literature, as well as monolingual
and etymological dictionaries, were consulted for the purpose. A survey was conducted
among seventy students from two state universities. The survey confirmed the initial
assumption that the concept of homeland is related to the emotional domain, while
the concept of state to the domain of cognition and reason. Homeland is connected
with the feelings of love and sacrifice, while state with respect and responsibility.
They have different semantic, cognitive, and axiological values: the concept of state is
evoked in contexts of neutral and negative value (legal state, sovereign state, democratic
state, stolen state, corrupt state, captured and stolen state), while the concept of
homeland is regularly used in contexts of positive value (beloved homeland).
