Abstract
Cyclic voltammetry (CV) is a potentiodynamic technique that finds application in various fields of chemistry, physics, pharmacy, biology etc. Its primary application is to get insight into the redox mechanisms of various important redox active compounds such as enzymes, drugs, metal ions, although it can be also used as a technique for qualitative and quantitative purposes. In the frame of this work we give a short overview of the theory of CV, while we focus on its applications in elucidating some simple redox mechanisms. In the second part of this work we point out the potential of cyclic voltammetry as a tool to get insight into the redox chemistry of quinones/hydroquinones redox systems. We took quinones/hydroquinones as representative examples since they are very important redox mediator and antioxidants, while finding wide application in various fields of medicine, pharmacy and chemistry. Together with square-wave voltammetry, cyclic voltammetry is the most widely explored electroanalytical technique in drug analysis.
