Abstract
Introduction: It is generally considered that the menstrual cycle is not followed by
significant gingival disorders, although occasionally an increased exudation from the inflamed
gingiva can be seen or an emphasis on pre-existing gingival inflammation. Aim: To asses the
impact of sex hormone progesterone in the maintenance of periodontal health in women in the
reproductive period of life by determining: - serum and salivary levels of progesterone; - the
influence of progesterone on the periodontal tissue complex, followed by the indices of periodontal
health. Material and Method: A group of 30 patients in the reproductive period, aged 30 to 45, was
formed; assessment of periodontal health was performed through the indexes of: dental plaque,
gingival inflammation, gingival enlargement, clinical attachment loss, and luxation of teeth.
Examination of serum and salivary levels of progesterone was performed with Progesterone RIADSL
3400 Advantage Diagnostics technology. Results: Pearson's coefficient of correlation between
the progesterone values in serum and saliva in the examinees from the reproductive period showed
a strong correlation ratio with an identical value of r = 0.86 in both media. The correlative values
between salivary and serum progesterone levels with periodontal indices indicated a moderate to strongly positive correlation (r = 0.46 to 0.83). Conclusion: The obtained results indicate the
pronounced influence of progesterone on gingival and periodontal health, which suggests the role of
dentists in treatment modalities in the reproductive period in women.
