Abstract

Aim. Taking into consideration the fact that antibiotics as drugs can only be used as an additional means in
the treatment of chronic periodontitis, the main goal of this paper is to evaluate the usage of antibiotics in the
treatment of chronic periodontitis.
Material and method. Ten general dental offices and five specialist clinics, or a total of 12 general dental
practitioners and 6 specialists in oral pathology and periodontology were part of this research. In all of these
clinics we made out research on how they diagnose chronical periodontitis, which antibiotics use to treat it, the
dosage of antibiotics and the duration of therapy.
Results. Of the total of 12 general dentists and 6 specialists in oral and periodontal diseases, most of them or
more precisely 8 of the subjects use Metronidazole in the treatment of chronic periodontitis, four of them as
primary drug use Clindamycin, three of them use the group of Doxycycline, and also three gave Amoxicillin
with Clavulonic acid as monotherapy. The most commonly used antibiotics in the treatment of chronic
periodontitis among our subjects are Tetracycline. Only one of the subjects used a combination of antibiotics
and Metronidazole with Amoxicillin with clavulonic acid.
Conclusion. What can be concluded is that dentists most often use empirical adjuvant antibiotic therapy in
patients with chronic peridontitis, use only one antibiotic as monotherapy, and an antibiotic that knows and
do not use the antibiogram.
Key words: Antibiotics, Chornical periodontitis, therapy, adjuvant therapy
