Abstract
Educators very often ask themselves the following question: what is the aim of education. This is philosophical question par excellence, and one part of philosophy is a natural place to look for answer to this question – philosophy of education. Modern philosophical theories and theoreticians are trying to provide systematic answer to this question, but they never agree on one and ultimate goal of education. But one such goal must be provided. One general answer offered, especially in modern philosophies of education is that the aim of education consists in fostering the development of student`s rationality. On this view, education has as its fundamental task both the development of student`s reasoning ability, and also the fostering of a complex attitudes, habits of mind, dispositions and character traits, such that students are not only able to reason well; they also care about reasons, and organize their beliefs, judgments and actions in accordance with the deliverances of the reasoned evaluation of reasons.
But, what about moral education? What is the use of fostering reason and argumentation skills in educational ethics? Is there any use of reason in human behaviour? Socrates believed that there is. He was standing on the position of moral intellectualism strongly believing that knowing the good entails following good? This paper is trying to answer exactly this dilemmas of ethical education: at the end of the day does students have any use of learning ethics at all? Are they becoming better persons after a semester, or two? If this outcome cannot be provided by the central aim of the education: fostering rationality and rational thinking, than what can be other more important aim than this one?
Key words: Educational goal, Argumentation, Reason, Cultivating reason, Educational Ethics, Ethical Education, Motivation, Will.
