Abstract
We investigated the effect of lovastatin (20 mg/day, during 6 weeks) on oxidative status parameters in 30 patients with severe dyslipidemia. There was considerable improvement of lipid status and significant improvement of oxidative status parameters (serum hydroperoxides, TAOS and anti-oxLDL). We also investigated the influence of combined antioxidant therapy (500 mg/day vitamin C and 100 mg/day vitamin E) in 20 patients on hemodialysis. In these patients, there was no change of lipid status parameters, while serum hydroperoxides significantly dropped down for 69.5%. TAOS did not change significantly, probably because of the influence of uremia itself. Finally, anti-oxLDL also did not change significantly, suggesting that its lowering is probably connected with lowering of LDL or with use of some other kind of antioxidant therapy.
