Abstract
Oral health is essential for general health and quality of life. Healthy oral cavity prevents not only the GI disorder, but contribute to well-being of the human body. According to WHO it is a state of being free from mount and facial pain, oral and throat cancer, oral infection and sores, periodontal (gum) disease, tooth decay, tooth loss and other diseases and disorders that limit an individual’s capacity in biting, chewing, smiling, speaking and psychosocial wellbeing.
Good oral hygiene is important for everyone, but it is especially important for people with gastrointestinal disease. Gastrointestinal diseases are those that affect any section of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus. The commonest gastrointestinal tract disorders include: oesophageal reflux, abdominal hernia, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, gall stones etc. Some of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases have oral manifestation like gum bleeding, gum proliferation, teeth abrasion, ulcerations, pain, etc. They need special oral care and hygiene to prevent of getting worse (teeth and gum disease).
The combination of oral hygiene and the therapy of the GI disorder is very important to prevent worsening of the main GI disorder and the oral status. The dentist should give advice for maintenance better oral hygiene with special soft bristle toothbrush with appropriate size, to avoid tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontal disease. Proper oral hygiene include cleaning oral cavity and teeth correctly and regularly: brushing thoroughly twice a day with fluoride paste and flossing at least once daily, eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks between meals, using dental products that contain fluoride, including toothpaste, using antiseptic mouthwash twice a day, quitting cigarette smoking etc. Visit the dentist regularly for professional cleaning and check-ups is the most important habit to reduce the risk of getting worse the oral status. The teeth must be cleaned professionally in dental office by dentist at least twice per year. Dental visits should take place every 3 months to monitor the condition of oral cavity and the stage of oral manifestation of gastrointestinal disease.
We recommended maintenance oral health with proper oral hygiene and combine with therapy of gastrointestinal disease to avoid worsening the systematic disorder.
