Abstract

During the period of the formation of a firm town
bourgeoisie, the town houses where made in the style
of the Bey homes, with large and high rooms, and
with architectural and aesthetic values. Today a very
small number of homes from the 19th century have
been preserved.
In this paper we present an example of a town
house, that was used by the Ottoman governors - the
Bey, these homes contain all the characteristics of
a rich town homes. The presented Bey home from
the 19th century in Kumanovo signifies an important
example of the architectural values of the traditional
town house. On the first floor of the house a large
terrace (čardak) was built, inside are set spacious
rooms, with decorative elements and with the influence
of the oriental homes from the 19th century ,that
are inserted in the frames of the characteristic Balkan
homes from the 19th century. A special accent is given
to the large courtyard, forming a specious place.
Similar models of Bey houses were built in other
cities, in Tetovo, Skopje, Štip, Bitola, Prilep, these
houses had large terraces (čardaks), incorporated
with more intense decorative elements in the exterior,
and the interior decoration of the rooms.
