Abstract
The formation of the complex of the Skopje fortress is associated with the reign of King Samuel in the 10th century, with a specific fortification building style that was developed in the Byzantine medieval period (10th to
14th century). In the medieval city there were built vital fortification walls with Byzantine form, which undergo certain damages because of its dominant military position and because it was a fortress with great significance for the middle Balkan. In the Turk period the fortress experiences numerous damages, an additional fortification wall from the outside, as well a change of the main
gates from the eastern entrance towards the city and the marketplace. In regard to the new research from this period we received a great number of data for all of the periods of building and the cultural layers, for the urban and fortification concept of the citadel. The urban and fortification transformation of the fortress is intense during Byzantine Slav period, as well as during the Ottoman reign. This refers to the position and the form of the buildings within the fortress, as well as to the form and function of the entrances through the rampart gates.
