Abstract

My paper focuses on an increasingly popular segment of contemporary fiction, namely novelistic refashioning of past stories and people’s lives in literary biographies. These texts exhibit diverse appropriations of facts, fictional characters, novels, conventions and motifs all assisting in establishing correspondences between the past and the present in various ways. Historiographic metafiction deals with this particular treatment of “fact” versus “fiction” by rejecting present beliefs and standards onto the past and asserting the specificity and particularity of individual past event.
