Abstract
Exposure to environmental radioactivity in some cases can be the most significant contributor
to total population dose from all sources of ionizing radiation. Environmental exposure include exposure
of external sources, such as cosmic rays and radiation of terrestrial origin: radioactive elements in the
ground and in building materials; and internal expose resulting from the inhalation and ingestion of
isotopes occurring in air and diet. Large-scale surveys, using different methods have been or are being
carried out in a number of countries over the world in order to estimate average exposures to different
radioactive sources in the environment. During last several years, a number of studies on environmental
radioactivity issue in Republic of Macedonia appeared as well in international literature. This
presentation summarised published data about terrestrial radioactivity, radioactivity in the mushrooms as
well indoor radon concentrations. Apart from discussing this results and its methods, this presentation
give an overview on past, on going and plans for further activities.
