Abstract
The growing global environmental concern, new and stronger environmental policies have forced some industries to look for new materials that will be able to substitute traditional composites reinforced with glass or carbon fibres. So, high rate of depletion of petroleum resources, as well as environmental awareness have forced the search for new natural fiber reinforced composite materials that are compatible with the environment.
Composites are made of reinforcement and matrix which are bonded at interface. The reinforcing material provides FRP composite with strength and stiffness and matrices material which is continuous phase gives rigidity and environmental protection. Polymer Composites are high performance materials made from fibre reinforced polymers (FRPs) which are gradually accepted for civil engineering and for applications where high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios are required.
There is a growing interest in the use of NF in reinforced polymers because of their high performance in terms of mechanical properties, significant processing advantages, chemical resistance, and low cost/low density ratio. On the other hand, for environmental reasons, there is an increased interest in replacing reinforcement materials (inorganic fillers and fibers) with renewable organic materials.
In frame of this presentation the brief review of the most commonly used polymers and natural fibers (NFs) in new group composite materials and some of my experience in the previous work on this topic will be given.
