Abstract

The aim of our study is displaying oral health in diabetic adolescents based on literature findings where periodontal disease was identified as the sixth complication of diabetes. The study protocol was approved by the Ethical committee in Medical Faculty. Sixty-two patients with type 1 diabetes, 14–22 years of age, were recruited from among the patients followed at the Diabetic center-Skopje. Sixty subjects at same age who denied history of diabetes, served as control subjects. Dental examination was recording of missing teeth, existing carious lesions, and number of dental restorations, based on clinical observation. Periodontal probe was: Plaque index each site was given a score from 0 to 3, as described by Silness and Loe, Gingival index, each site was given a score from 0 to 3, according to Loe and Silness. In this index, a gingival index score of 2 or 3 denotes a bleeding site. Probing depth, defined as the distance between the gingival margin and the bottom of the pocket to the nearest whole millimeter Ninety per cent of adolescents reported an impact related to oral health. Evidence suggests that adolescents with type1 diabetes are more affected with periodontal infections than control group at same age. Managing good oral health can further have a positive effect on the level of metabolic control in these individuals.
