Abstract

The aim of this study is to demonstrate the contemporary approach as well as the interdisciplinary management of impacted canines in the upper and lower jaw. Impacted canines are common and frequent complain. Therefore, the literature upon this pathology is intensive. A sine qua non in the treatment of an impacted canine is the proper diagnostic work-up with emphasis on the position of the canine.
A contemporary treatment concept involves radiographic studies as well as orthodontic and oral surgical procedures. The evaluation of the periodontal status of the treated teeth at conclusion of the orthodontic treatment has been in many hands neglected. We hereby show several clinical cases we were confronted with during the past few years, of patients with impacted maxillary and mandibulary teeth, treated with staged approach.
Conclusion
A proper and delicate diagnosis of impacted canines is imperative for treatment planning. It provides clues for the time required for treatment, and it may prevent not-forthcoming complications.
Completing the orthodontic part of the therapy does not mean finalization of the definitive treatment of the impacted canines.
An appropriate periodontal status of the repositioned impacted tooth as well as of the nearby teeth is the only reward for the dentists for a successful oral-surgical as well as orthodontic therapy of the impacted canines.
