Abstract
Introduction: The maxillary sinus is a paranasal cavity, located in the body of the upper jaw and is in close anatomical-topographic relationship with the roots of the teeth in the posterior region of the maxilla.
Objective: This study aimed to note the proximity of the roots of the maxillary posterior teeth to the floor of the sinus maxillaris, as well as to determine the correlation of the radiological findings and software measurements with the planned oral-surgical treatment.
Materials and methods: Tooth extraction was performed at the Oral Surgery Clinic in a total of 40 patients, aged 18 to 65 years. The patients were divided into two groups: the first group in which the radiological finding and the measurements with the Image Tool 3 program corresponded to the planned treatment and the second group where these findings did not correspond to the planned treatment.
Results: The results of the statistical processing of the data showed that male patients have a predilection for the occurrence of oroantral communication (OAC), which in 40% of the cases occurs due to the intimate ratio of the maxillary second and first molars.
Conclusion: Preoperative examination of the proximity of these anatomical structures can potentially help in predicting OAC, but despite this, the clinical examination of OAC after tooth extraction is mandatory.
Keywords: sinus maxillaris, anatomy of maxilla, maxillary posterior teeth.
