Abstract

Abstract: The role of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L) in the development of agricultural production and intensification of forage production is due to the high potential of biomass on the one hand and anti-oxidative and nutritional value on the other hand. The crops of alfalfa were analyzed from different locations in Skopje, Tetovo and Ovche Pole regions in Republic of Macedonia. Modern techniques have been used for analyzing of bio-pigment activity, organic production and anti-oxidative activity in multiple measuring points. Significant differences are found in the production of carbohydrate content and bio-pigments (total chlorophyll and carotenoids) between the locations in Skopje region on the one hand and Ovche Pole and Tetovo regions on the other hand. The antioxidant potential has been measured via the catalase activity, showing the highest values in Ovche Pole region and the lowest in Skopje region. This is one of the reasons why the alfalfa has greater importance in sustainable agriculture and organic production, despite of its role in conventional production.

Key words: alfalfa, chloroplast pigments, carbohydrates, catalase, antioxidant capacity.
