Abstract

Brain metastases are the most common type of intracranial tumor and occur in 25% of cancer patients. There are still controversies about the demographic and clinical profile of brain metastases. Socio-demographic factors in patients such as income, health insurance and a rural / urban environment affect the outcome in patients with cancer.
Aim:
The purpose of the study is to show the influence of socioeconomic status on the degree of presentation of symptoms in patients with brain metastases and the need for hospitalization in patients from the eastern part of Macedonia.
Materials and Methods:
A retrospective study was conducted for the period 2016-2018. The study included patients hospitalized for neurology Stip (47 patients) who demonstrated the presence of brain metastases. The data were processed according to the following criteria: gender, age, individual / multiple metastases, metastases of known primary origin / metastases of unknown primary origin, presence and degree of neurological symptoms, and general condition assessment according to the ECOG scale. All data were processed in correlation with the socio-economic status of patients (according to Kuppuswamy scale).
Results:
The analysis showed that there was no association of socio-economic status and the incidence of metastases. 65% (headache), 52% (vomiting) and even 35.5% of patients were neurologically deficient, with 4% being in upper socio-economic status, 30% in upper middle, and 35.6% in low.
Discussion:
Socioeconomic status was associated with severe neurological symptoms and a worse general condition according to ECOG in patients with brain metastases and an increased need for hospitalization, with symptoms persisting after treatment.
