Abstract
According to Kohlberg, Piaget, Maslow, Jung, Rogers, and others, human being has inherent need for eternity. The highest level of personal development is self-actualization, self-integration, which leads to autonomous and self – regulating behavior. All of us have that metaphysical motive for self –development and touching higher level of existence. Not less than everything, not less than eternity – that is the essential human need; that is the dream we are leaving for. Reaching this dream gives meaning to our lives.
Does school has something to do with it? How school can help developing this need for reaching the highest level of personal development? How school can stimulate this need, and even more, how can give direction to it? Because education means exactly that – moral development and internalization of universal values that gives meaning.
In this paper we will show that school can not be treated only in sociological an historical context. Education is education for personal development. That is why school must have that universal and even metaphysical dimension in education, especially today, when science dehumanizes our lives. Scientific discoveries can not provide us eternity - we will have to create it by becoming better persons. Does school is capable of that and how – that is the key question in this paper?
