Linear and nonlinear strains (rotations and drifts) in a uniform shear beam subjected to a strong-motion pulse at its base are analyzed. The dependence is described of the computed strains on the amplitude and duration of the wave pulse and on the material properties of the shear beam. The results should provide a useful elementary background that can serve to help further understanding of the advantages of displacement-based design and the power design method.
