Abstract

This Master’s Thesis examines the role of the clusters in increasing the competitiveness of national economies by stimulating innovation, with the objective of increased productivity of products and services, both in the domestic and international markets in conditions of globalization of the world economy. The notions of cluster and cluster organization/ association became especially popular in the mid-1990s, with the progress of globalization. Nations and regions endeavor to remain competitive and adapt to the conditions of globalization. Regional specialization, developed throughout the decades, has been rapidly transformed. Most of the regions that traditionally represented production hubs, have lost their advantage due to the competition from regions with low costs of production and they had to re-orient their activities to products with higher added value and fields with high performances for research and development. Four factors have a key role in establishing clusters: the process of determining the form of the association, selection of a form, realization of the association and the benefit for the companies. Important feature of the leading market economies is the association of the enterprises in clusters, which results in a network of mutually useful links for exchange of ideas, information, introduction of new technologies, research and development, acquiring new managerial skills and qualifications and conquering new markets. Cluster management is a continuous activity of a cyclic nature, aimed at achievement of clearly defined objectives. Cluster policy is an area that is developing at an intensive pace. The institutional assistance to the small and medium enterprises in the European Union has been increasingly provided through the clusters. National governments create policies, programs and measures for support of the clusters, organize promotion and training for raising the awareness about clustering and improving managerial capabilities. The Republic of Macedonia is following these trends. The cluster approach is people - oriented and based on entrepreneurship promotion and innovation stimulation. The innovation is a key to increasing the competitiveness and growth of the enterprises. That is the focus of the study of the companies – members of the cluster organizations/associations which is directed towards measuring their innovation capacity.
