Abstract
In order to help students to master the skill of reading, teachers need to know as much as possible about the processes involved in reading and how to apply that knowledge in teaching. As a result of research in psychology, sociology, linguistics and education, today we have new knowledge about the mental processes that occur during reading. Reading is defined as a psycholingusitic guessing game, as communication, as a dynamic process in which the reader has an active role in creating the meaning of the text. This paper discusses the processes involved in reading and the reading models that attempt to explain these processes. The recommendation for teachers is that in order to help their students to develop the skills of reading, besides presenting and practicing reading strategies, they should encourage students to read as much as possible. For this purpose, it is necessary to include an extensive reading component in the reading program.
