Abstract
Aim:
The aim of this study is to present combined management between a specialist orthodontist and specialist oral surgeon in the treatment of impacted canines.
Impacted permanent canines are relatively common and have been documented extensively in the literature.
Material and method:
Before choosing the adequate type of treatment precise diagnostics is very important. The treatment of impacted canine included:
1. Pretreatment Radiographic Variables: typical radiological examination with orthopantomogram, occlusal or retroalveolar X-rays and computed tomography.
2. Surgical - Orthodontic Treatment divided into three phases:
• Initial orthodontic treatment aimed at creating space on the maxillary and mandibulary arch by means of fixed appliance therapy.
• Surgical exposure and orthodontic traction of the impacted canine towards the center of the alveolar ridge.
• Final orthodontic treatment to align the canine in the dental arch.
3. Periodontal Evaluation of the treated teeth at the completion of the overall orthodontic treatment.
According of this type of treatment several clinical cases with maxillary and mandibulary impacted canines will be present.
Conclusions
Precise impacted canine diagnosis is essential for the best treatment plan; it validates the treatment time and allows to reduce possible complications. The treatment of an impacted canine is not completed merely with its orthodontic alignment. Final periodontal health is a fundamental key to evaluate the success of therapy for impacted canines.
