Abstract
Agriculture is facing pest problems that are becoming harder to predict. Rising temperatures, changes in rainfall, and more frequent climatic extremes can affect where pests occur, how quickly they develop, and how many generations they complete during a season. At the same time, repeated use of pesticides has contributed to resistance and can reduce populations of beneficial and non-target organisms. These changes suggest that plant protection needs to move beyond a simple response to pests after they appear.
And the question is how plant protection can be adapted to these challenges by bringing together prevention, monitoring, biological control, agroecological practices, and more precise use of pesticides?
Examples from climate-related changes in pest populations, together with developments in remote sensing, artificial intelligence, sterile insect techniques, microbial control, and RNA-based approaches, show that new tools can improve the way pest risks are detected and managed. Their use, however, should be considered within an Integrated Pest Management framework rather than as a replacement for one control method with another. So, the future of plant protection will depend not only on controlling individual pest species, but also on improving the resilience of cropping systems and reducing their dependence on repeated chemical intervention. Rethinking plant protection therefore means changing both the tools we use and the way we understand the problem itself.
