Abstract
Sustainable tourism represents one of the sectors with high development potential in the Balkan region, contributing to economic growth, cultural heritage preservation and environmental protection. This paper aims to analyze the potential of sustainable tourism in the Balkans through a review of existing regional and international literature, identifying the main opportunities and challenges that affect its development in a dynamic socio-economic and environmental context. The focus is on the role of public policies, the management of tourist destinations and the involvement of local communities in development processes. The methodology used is based on the qualitative analysis of secondary sources, including scientific articles, reports of international organizations and strategic documents of the countries of the region. Through this approach, the paper provides a comprehensive overview of current trends in the development of sustainable tourism, highlighting best practices and successful models implemented in different Balkan countries.
The findings show that the region possesses significant natural and cultural resources, including national parks, protected areas, rich historical heritage and cultural diversity, which constitute a strong basis for the development of sustainable tourism. However, the development of this sector faces a number of challenges, such as insufficient tourism infrastructure, lack of institutional coordination, inefficient resource management, and the lack of integrated strategies and cross-border cooperation.
