It is with great pleasure that we present this work entitled
Diplomacy and International Law: A Diplomatic Glossary. This publication is the result of sustained academic work and teaching engagement in the fields of diplomacy, for-eign policy, and international public law. The primary aim of this glossary is to serve as a practical and accessible ref-erence tool for students, scholars, and all readers interest-ed in international relations and diplomatic practice. The glossary is designed for general use, but it is particularly intended to support students attending courses such as Foundations of Diplomacy, International Public Law, In-ternational Relations, and related subjects. For this reason, the explanations are concise, clear, and focused on clarify-ing the core meaning and legal relevance of key concepts used in diplomacy and international law.
In preparing this work, the authors were mindful that a purely terminological approach may appear abstract or difficult for students encountering these concepts for the first time. To address this, and to make the learning process more engaging, selected practical examples and short case studies from contemporary international rela-tions have been included at the end of the glossary. These examples are intended to illustrate how diplomatic and international legal concepts operate in real situations and to encourage learning through concrete cases rather than abstract definitions alone.
The glossary includes key terms from diplomacy, foreign policy, and international law that are commonly used in academic literature and international practice. The selection of terms reflects their relevance for understand-ing the structure, functioning, and principles of interna-tional relations and the international legal order. This work does not aim to provide exhaustive theoretical analysis, but rather to function as a compact and user-friendly guide that supports study, teaching, and introductory research. Each entry is structured to allow readers to quickly grasp the essential meaning of a concept and its place within the broader framework of diplomacy and international law.
We hope that this publication will be a useful learning aid and reference source for students and other readers, contributing to a clearer and more structured un-derstanding of diplomatic and international legal terminol-ogy.
