Dentist's perspectives regarding periodontal preparation prior dental implantation

Introduction: Pre-implant therapeutic procedures are primarily aimed at eliminating oral risk factors that may lead to complications during or after dental implant therapy. Periodontal treatment represents a fundamental step in implant planning, as the elimination of periopathogenic microorganisms is essential for optimal healing and for reducing the risk of peri-implantitis.
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate dentists’ attitudes and clinical approaches regarding periodontal preparation prior to dental implant placement.
Materials and Methods: A total of 40 general and specialist dentists who routinely place dental implants participated in this survey. Data were collected using an anonymous, structured questionnaire designed to assess periodontal evaluation and treatment protocols prior to implant therapy.
Results: Periodontal status assessment of the remaining dentition prior to implant placement was reported by 98% of participants. Most respondents indicated the use of a combination of diagnostic methods for periodontal evaluation. Furthermore, 93% of dentists stated that implant placement should be postponed in patients with active periodontal disease until adequate periodontal treatment is completed.
Conclusion: The findings emphasize the importance of thorough periodontal assessment and management of periodontal infections prior to dental implant placement in order to minimize the risk of postoperative complications and ensure long-term implant success.
